About the Solana Historical Society

A place where collectors and NFT historians come together to learn how NFTs started on Solana and what their official provenance is.

Our story

The Society was founded by Timon “The OG” on X (opens in a new tab) and infinitegames (Infinite Games) on X (opens in a new tab).

We aim to provide hard data for early collections that doesn’t rely on what a random person said online, but seeks on-chain information corroborated by people who were there at the time it happened, and to protect the stories that helped build our ecosystem for the people who come to learn later.

Most of the data that exists has been scattered among a few people, and the information around it is often clouded by narratives told by projects, founders and enthusiasts. We hope to provide one place where solid facts and data can be provided and discussed, to remove some of the misinformation.

For now we keep the data limited to 2021. By 2022 there were already over a million NFTs minted on Solana, and our goal right now is the earliest collections.

The council

Think of the Council as the Society’s preservation board, a little like the board of a nonprofit (a comparison only, not a description of how the Society is organized). It is a diverse group of Solana OGs, chosen to help “weigh in” on questions of provenance and historicity.

Early Solana was young, and its tech and ecosystem don’t always leave a single clear answer. When a call has to be made one way or another, the Council brings context and wisdom to the decision, so the record rests on careful judgement rather than on narratives told by projects, founders and enthusiasts.

One example: to order the first mints on Solana, the question was whether “first” means who opened their mint to the public first or who finished minting first. An overwhelming majority chose “opened mint,” and that is how the first collections are now ordered.

Join us or support the Society

We need a lot more NFT archeologists who go looking for specific data around the 2021 collections on Solana. Reach out in #general, share relevant tweets, or post your own 2021 mint stories in the project threads. To support the Society, follow us on X and help spread the word, or tell us about an idea or developer skill that could help.
